This piece by Edward Elgar is one of the most famous pieces classical music. Grade 5 began by using it to learn some chords on the guitars and keyboards. We then developed our version of it to turn the class into a mini orchestra with strings, brass and percussion instruments.
Playing as a percussion ensemble is something that all Grades do from time to time and at each level we are seeking to acquire new skills. Grade 5 have been learning new techniques for playing advanced rhythms with hand drums, tambourines and maracas as well as working on reading written out rhythms in percussion scores with up to five individual parts.
Following the success of Connect 4 and their interest in sampled music, Grade 5 have gone one step beyond. They have now created their own 'bangin' sample compositions and written words to go with them.
